Responsible AI Pledge

A Call to Action for the Film Industry: Embracing the Human-First Responsible AI Pledge

This paper is a personal appeal born from over three decades spent in our incredible industry. It represents my complete commitment, alongside my co-creators, to navigating the complexities of artificial intelligence with care, creativity, and a steadfast focus on humanity.

I believe the principles outlined here are not just a guide, but a foundational text for building a better, more equitable, and more imaginative future for filmmaking and film marketing.

1. Introduction: A New Act for Filmmaking

Artificial intelligence is no longer on the horizon; it is here, rapidly integrating into every stage of the creative process, from the writers’ room to the final marketing campaign. We stand at a pivotal moment, one filled with the immense opportunity to revolutionize storytelling and the significant risk of eroding the very human artistry that defines our craft. As a consultant who has dedicated my career to this industry, I have seen many technological shifts, but none as profound as this. This paper argues that in the face of this profound shift, proactive ethical guidance is not a ‘nice-to-have’ but a competitive necessity as the only framework that can drive sustainable innovation while safeguarding our commercial viability and creative soul.

This pledge is not a list of restrictions but our industry’s essential guide. It is a promise to prioritise people, protect our craft, and build a future where technology unequivocally serves artistry. It is our collective commitment to ensuring that as we embrace the new, we do not lose sight of what truly matters: the human heart of our stories.

2. My Commitment: Why We Built This Pledge for Our Industry

To fully grasp the value of the Human-First Responsible AI Pledge, it is crucial to understand the ‘why’ behind its creation. This framework was not conceived in a vacuum but forged from decades of hands-on experience and a shared sense of urgency. I am proud to be a co-creator of this pledge alongside two brilliant minds, Mitali Deypurkaystha and Dr Yulia Dzenkovska. Together, we bring a unique blend of expertise aimed at shaping the future of AI in the creative and business worlds.

My personal mission has always been to make technology creative, clear, and practical. This is complemented by Mitali’s focus on making AI profitable, principled, and people-powered, and Yulia’s belief in an AI that serves people, not just processes. This fusion of expertise is what allowed us to build a pledge that uniquely addresses the film industry’s need to balance artistic integrity with commercial reality. We saw our industry grappling with the rapid onset of AI without a shared ethical standard, and we developed this pledge as a practical and commercially viable response to that challenge. It is designed to move beyond abstract principles and provide a tangible framework for leaders to adopt AI responsibly, ensuring that our technological advancements strengthen our community rather than fragmenting it.

3. The ‘H.U.M.A.N.’ Framework: Five Principles for Responsible AI in Film

At the heart of our pledge is the ‘H.U.M.A.N.’ framework, a memorable and actionable acronym designed to guide creators, producers, marketers, and leaders through the complexities of AI. These five principles provide a clear standard for making decisions that are not only technologically innovative but also ethically sound and fundamentally human.

3.1 H – Human-Centred

  • Principle: ‘Put people first, ensuring AI strengthens trust, wellbeing, and inclusion. Lead a forward-thinking culture of inventive and imaginative use of AI.’
  • Application in Film: In an industry powered by human collaboration, this principle is paramount. It means deploying AI not to replace the essential roles of writers, directors, actors, and artisans, but to augment their creative capabilities. It calls for designing tools that enhance brainstorming, streamline complex post-production tasks, or offer new avenues for audience engagement, all while keeping the human creator firmly in control of the narrative and artistic vision. A human-centred approach ensures that technology remains a co-pilot, not the pilot.

3.2 U – Uncompromising Safety

  • Principle: ‘Build AI systems that are safe, reliable and aligned with human values. Pause or stop any AI that poses intolerable risks to people or society.’
  • Application in Film: Our industry is built on image, reputation, and intellectual property. Uncompromising safety is fundamental to preserving these assets. This principle directly addresses the tangible risks of AI misuse, such as the creation of unauthorized digital likenesses of actors (deepfakes) or the generation of harmful content that could damage a studio’s or an individual’s reputation. It mandates a clear line: if an AI application poses a threat to an artist’s identity, the integrity of a film, or the trust of our audience, we must have the conviction to pause or stop its use.

3.3 M – Measured & Fair

  • Principle: ‘Test and monitor AI to reduce bias, harm, and unintended risks. Protect privacy and uphold the highest standards of data security.’
  • Application in Film: Fairness is critical to both creative and commercial practices. This principle demands that we rigorously audit AI tools for inherent biases that could influence casting decisions, script analysis, or audience segmentation, thereby perpetuating harmful stereotypes. In film marketing, it means that any audience data collected to personalise campaigns must be handled with the highest standards of privacy and security, respecting the trust that viewers place in us.

3.4 A – Accountable & Transparent

  • Principle: ‘Be clear about when and how AI is used, including labelling AI-generated content. Train and empower teams to question AI outputs and stay accountable.’
  • Application in Film: Artistic integrity relies on honesty. This principle calls for clear and transparent labelling of AI-generated or AI-assisted content, whether in marketing materials, visual effects, or even film credits. Audiences and collaborators deserve to know the provenance of the work they are experiencing. Furthermore, accountability means empowering our creative teams, from editors to visual effects artists, to question and override AI-generated outputs, ensuring that the final product always reflects the intended human vision, not an algorithmic suggestion.

3.5 N – Neighbourhood & Community

  • Principle: ‘Share AI knowledge and tools across communities to ensure no one’s left behind. Strengthen the wider AI ecosystem with quality data and clear governance.’
  • Application in Film: This principle champions equity across our entire industry. The power of AI should not be concentrated in the hands of a few major studios. By sharing knowledge, best practices, and tools, we can prevent a debilitating skills gap from forming between well-funded productions and independent filmmakers. Fostering an open, collaborative environment ensures that creators at all levels have the opportunity to innovate, leading to a more diverse, dynamic, and resilient film ecosystem for everyone.

By embedding these five principles into our workflow, we do more than mitigate risk; we build a foundation of trust and integrity that becomes the very bedrock of our commercial success in the AI era.

4. A New Business Standard: Why the Pledge is Good for Creativity and Commerce

Adopting the Human-First Responsible AI Pledge is a core business strategy for navigating a volatile technological landscape. In an era of rampant misinformation and data insecurity, trust is the ultimate commercial asset. This pledge is a critical tool for de-risking investments, securing market leadership, and future-proofing our creative and commercial assets. For the modern film industry, these principles are non-negotiable for long-term viability.

  • Building Audience Trust: Transparency about AI usage and an unwavering commitment to safety builds a powerful, lasting bond with audiences. Viewers are more likely to invest their time and money in creators and studios they perceive as authentic and trustworthy.
Protecting Our Intellectual Property: In the age of generative AI, our unique stories, characters, and visual styles are our most precious assets. A clear ethical framework provides the moral and practical foundation needed to protect the intellectual property of writers, filmmakers, and studios from unauthorized replication or misuse.
  • Future-Proofing Our Skillset: The pledge is a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation. By prioritizing a human-centred approach and fostering a community of knowledge-sharing, we empower creative professionals to master AI as a powerful tool, ensuring their skills evolve rather than become obsolete.
  • Establishing a Competitive Edge: Organizations that publicly adopt this pledge will distinguish themselves as industry leaders. They will attract top-tier talent seeking an ethical and forward-thinking work environment and resonate with audiences who increasingly value authentic, human-crafted storytelling.

Ultimately, adopting the pledge is a declaration that our industry values long-term integrity over short-term shortcuts. It is a collective responsibility that will define the future leaders of entertainment.
